Radio One looks ahead

Executives at Radio One are looking forward to the addition of a major market radio station to their portfolio - - WSNJ-FM is in the process of physically moving into the Philadelphia market. That said, execs expressed almost a sense of relief that 2003, overall, was not a big M&A year. The peace and quiet gave the rapidy-gfrowing group a chance to assess and work with what they already had acquired.

That said, it will keep its eyes peeled for further acquisitions, although they think consolidation is entering the "late innings." Particularly is will try to add properties in existing markets, but will remain open to new market entrances where sensible opportunities come their way.

Radio One station clusters in many markets are booming. It's tendency will be to lavish extra care and attention on its weaker, more challenging radio markets - - places like Columbus, Richmond, Charlotte, Augusta, Louisville and the aforementioned Philadelphia.

The care and feeding of Television One will also be an important focus going ahead. It hopes to run 33% original programming on the infant cable net. It is already proud of its all-star lineup of advertisers.

The company, which has been holding the line on personnel expenses during the advertising slump, is now poised to invest in operational staff as it focuses on growth going ahead.
